The online rules
Regulated online gambling in Ontario has had an open market since April 4, 2022. The AGCO is its regulator, while iGaming Ontario conducts and manages it. To be legal in the province, a private online casino needs both an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario and its own AGCO registration.
OLG.ca is different from those private sites. The provincial agency OLG operates it directly as its online casino. The iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca lists the regulated sites, and any operator name can be looked up there.
Two conditions apply to every online player. Each player has to be at least 19 years old and physically inside Ontario during play. Lottery tickets alone are 18+, so the 19 rule is about casinos and online casino play. Under Ontario law, the same age applies to entering or staying in a land-based casino such as the Fraserville slots floor.
Opting out
iGaming Ontario has operated BetGuard, found at betguard.ca, since May 14, 2026. A single exclusion there reaches each regulated online gambling site in the province, with OLG.ca among them. A person picks 6 months, 5 years or 1 year, or sets a custom length.
Land-based casinos fall outside its scope, and that includes the slots at Kawartha Downs. For those, OLG's My PlayBreak applies. A casino break blocks every Ontario casino for its term: 1 to 5 years, or a shorter 3 or 6 months. No early cancellation is possible once the term starts. Enrolment takes place with staff on site, at a PlaySmart Centre, or through a call to 1-800-387-0098, the OLG Support Centre.
How this guide is paid
The Ad mark appears on every paid link, and the home page is the single page that has them. A menu button holds one; a block directly below the first screen holds another; a block near the bottom holds the third. Every one of them goes to a single partner running a private online casino, open to adults physically located in Ontario. That partner pays this guide by commission.
No page names the partner, which can change and is not OLG.ca. Shorelines Slots at Kawartha Downs, Kawartha Downs, Great Canadian, OLG, iGaming Ontario, the AGCO and help services have no tie to it. This guide receives no payment from any of them. Each operator can be verified through the directory of iGaming Ontario, at igamingontario.ca.
Questions
Short readings
- Is it legal in Ontario to play at an online casino?
- Yes, on a regulated site. A private online casino needs AGCO registration plus an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario to be legal. Those sites appear in the directory at igamingontario.ca.
- How old must an online player be?
- Play is open only to someone aged 19 or older who is physically in Ontario at the time.
- Does BetGuard cover the racetrack slots?
- Land-based casinos fall outside BetGuard, so the Kawartha Downs slots are not covered by it. OLG's My PlayBreak covers Ontario casinos.
- Why do Ad links appear on the home page?
- Those links all reach the same private online casino, a partner from which the guide earns a commission. The guide accepts no bets, opens no accounts and is not itself a casino. No page names that partner, which is subject to change.
